Bacteriostatic Water vs Sterile Water: What Is the Difference?
Both begin sterile when sealed correctly. The principal difference is the preservative: bacteriostatic water contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol and may support repeated withdrawal when the label permits multi-dose use, while preservative-free sterile water generally does not. The experimental protocol determines which diluent is correct — bacteriostatic water is not automatically right for every compound.

What they have in common
Bacteriostatic water and sterile water for injection (SWFI) start from the same place: highly purified water, filtered and sterilised to pharmacopoeia standards, with no salts, sugars or buffers. Neither contains anything that changes the concentration or identity of the compound you dissolve in it. Both are clear, colourless and pH-neutral.
The one real difference
Sterile water has nothing added . Bacteriostatic water has 0.9% benzyl alcohol , a preservative that inhibits bacterial replication. That is the entire distinction — but it drives everything about how each is used.
Because SWFI has no preservative, any organism introduced on the needle can grow. That is why an opened SWFI vial is single-use. The benzyl alcohol in bacteriostatic water suppresses that growth, so the vial survives repeated punctures.

A note on benzyl alcohol
Benzyl alcohol at 0.9% is what makes bacteriostatic water “bacteriostatic.” For laboratory reconstitution its job is to inhibit bacterial growth across repeated draws. It does not sterilise contamination or guarantee an uncontaminated vial. If a protocol calls for a benzyl-alcohol-free preparation, preservative-free sterile water is the substitute — typically at the cost of the multi-use window.
